The Best Coffee Machines For Home
There’s no universally-fit-all coffee machine. This is why we’ve compiled our top picks for your home, from a super-automatic that grinds and packs your beans, to semi-automatics that give you the most control over your espresso.
The Breville Oracle Touch strikes a perfect balance between automatizing the process while needing you to be knowledgeable about the art of making espresso. It’s the best bean-to-cup machine we’ve come across.
1. Rocket Appartamento
Rocket Appartamento is a great option for those who want to make espresso at home without sacrificing quality. This espresso machine for the prosumer is designed with limited counter space in mind. It is built to last with a high-end build quality and tiny footprint. It is equipped with a 1.8-liter copper heat exchange boiler as well as a commercial E61 group head so you can steam milk and brew espresso at the same time.
The machine also looks great and features a round insert on the side panel with the steam engraved and hot water spouts. This is a refreshing update on the classic look of Rocket that is already impressive for a compact machine. It also comes with the black pressure gauge, which shows when the boiler is ready for use.
The drip tray and the water reservoir tray are smaller on this machine than other models. You will need be cautious when emptying and re-filling the machine. This is especially the case in the event that you frequently use it. This is a normal trade-off for having a smaller footprint, though, and not an issue particular to this model.
You can still brew a lot of coffee using this machine, and it can easily keep up with your demands. That being said, we would suggest investing in a quality grinder, such as the Baratza Sette Gigante for greater consistency and flavor. You can also pair the machine with a Rocket Portafilter to increase the tamping.
As a prosumer espresso machine, the Rocket Appartamento is capable of making delicious drinks, and is easy to create Latte art. However, it’s important to remember that the machine was not designed for beginners, and there is some learning curve for those upgrading from appliances. The heat exchange boiler could be a bit difficult to manage, and you will have to learn the basics of cooling flushes.
Both the Lelit Bianca and the Rocket Appartamento provide the option of connecting to a water source, which means you’ll always have cold, fresh filtered water on hand for your drinks. The latter has a 2.25-liter water tank, which could be more difficult to refill than its competitors.
2. Lavazza A Modo Mio Jolie
As you might expect from a Lavazza machine this one was designed with quality in mind. It is quick to reach the brewing temperature, allowing you to make your first cup of coffee in less than 35 seconds. The water tank is quick and easy to fill, with the lid detaching completely to make a wide opening. You can fill it up with tap water depending on what you prefer.
The Lavazza A Modo Mio is the smallest model in the series, yet it is a powerful machine. It’s priced at less than PS100 at the full price which is less than the Nespresso Essenza or similar machines from SMEG or Desea. The Jolie is a great option for those who don’t have the space or funds for a traditional espresso machine however still want to experience an authentic Italian espresso.
The Jolie is simple to use and requires little counter space. Pressing a single button will start the machine. Pressing it again will start dispense the pod you have selected. There’s a light on the button to ensure that you are able to see clearly the amount of liquid that has been dispersed and you can also stop the process at any time should you prefer to drink the pod in smaller amounts.
The model isn’t equipped with a steam wand but you can add some creamy foam to your milk with an optional milk frother. The machine is very quiet as well, and can be used in a small space or in a kitchen with flatshare without causing any disturbance to anyone else.
Pods aren’t expensive, but there’s an array of blends to choose from to suit everyone from the mildest to the most demanding espresso drinkers. They are available in most supermarkets alongside regular ground coffee and coffee beans and you can also buy Lavazza A Modo Mio compatible pods on the internet.
The Jolie and Milk is a stylish capsule machine that has an integrated milk warmer and a frother. It comes with a 75cm power cable and plug as well as a quick-guide and warranty sheet, and a test box that contains nine Lavazza pods which include six roasts (two Qualita Rossa, two Lungo Dolce and two Delizioso) and two decaffeinated (Dek Cremoso). The machine is compact enough to fit under a cabinet or on flat surfaces.
3. Breville BES870XL
The Breville Barista Express appears to be a high-priced espresso machine. If you’re willing to put in the work to learn how to use it, this is an excellent espresso maker for your home that performs better than some of the more expensive models available. It’s among the best priced in its class, and is especially good for novices who do not have an espresso maker yet–which can easily cost them another $100 or more.
This model is priced less than the most expensive Breville Oracle (the most expensive at $2199), but is still an excellent choice for baristas on a budget. It’s loaded with customizable features, and even an integrated burr mill to make it more affordable. It’s also a single boiler machine, which means it can only handle one thing at a time.
Despite being a relatively newcomer to the market of espresso machines, Breville has quickly made an impact with their high-quality appliances. This machine is no different and has enough control that it can be adjusted to allow aspiring baristas to develop their skills without spending more than they need to.
The unit does not come without its quirks. The hopper is on the side, not the top, of this model. It’s not a huge deal, but can be a problem if you wish to dispense several shots at a time. It’s also difficult to see how much water remains in the tank due to its rear placement.
If you’re willing to put in some time in learning how to use the Breville Barista Express then it’s an excellent appliance for any coffee lover at home. The only issue with the Breville Barista Express is its price, which may be a deterrent for certain buyers. If you’re looking for a low-cost alternative, we suggest the Gaggia Classic and the La Pavoni Impresso. Both are equally capable and offer a bit more control than the Barista Express, but they’ll cost a fraction of what this Breville model can do.
4. OXO Brew 9-Cup
A high-tech smart machine for coffee with a simple user interface that produces excellent coffee. The sleek stainless steel design with backlit LED screen gives your kitchen a sophisticated design. It has one dial that allows you to program the amount of cups. There are two settings: 2-4 cups and 5-9 cups. Its brewing process is similar to pour-over the grounds, which many coffee lovers believe makes the best tasting coffee. The water is heated to the right temperature, then poured evenly over the coffee grounds with a shower head. The coffee brewed is then stored in the double-walled, thermal carafe for upto 60 minutes. The pause-and-pour function lets you to remove the carafe during making your coffee and filling it with the right amount. The machine stops the brewing process and displays an red light on its LED interface until you return the carafe. It then resumes brewing.
The OXO Brew 9-Cup coffee maker is certified by SCAA, which means it complies with the strict standards of SCAA’s technical standards. The brew cycle is as long as those of the Bodum BISTRO and the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741, but it offers more control over temperature, brewing duration, and quality.
In our tests in our testing, the OXO Brew 9-Cup produced excellent drip coffee that was served in a full-carafe in 7 minutes and 41 seconds. That’s a little longer than the 6 minutes or less that the Bonavita Connoisseur and the Moccamaster require, but it falls within the range of time that experts in the field suggest for a decent cup of drip.
It also requires that you grind your own beans before brewing. You can make use of an old-fashioned coffee grinder or go for a more automated model, such as the Baratza Encore, which has different grind settings and a hopper that holds whole beans.
The only downside is that the carafe and water reservoir aren’t dishwasher-safe and could cause hassle for certain users. The stainless steel is still easy to clean by hand, however. The OXO Brew 9-Cup’s sleek style and user-friendly interface make it one of the top contenders among top drip coffee makers.
